What is EDI (Electronic Data Interchange)?

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is a standardized method for businesses to exchange documents and data electronically. It allows them to automate processes and ensure fast, accurate, and reliable communication between trading partners. Standards make these documents easier for everyone to read. Some commonly used EDI formats include ANSI X-12 and EDIFACT… as well as XML which isn’t an EDI format per se but is commonly used within EDI systems. A B2B/EDI platform will leverage all major internet-based protocols, like AS2 and AS4, with security features and full visibility and control. It should also include EDI mapping and orchestration functions, so various document formats can easily be exchanged. While there is sometimes talk of newer technologies like APIs replacing EDI, much of the modern supply chain still relies on it – from healthcare and energy to manufacturing or automotive technology. A more realistic path forward includes layering APIs on top of EDI processes for more integrated, real-time capabilities.
