Driving API Success: API Product Managers Strategy for Managing and Optimizing API Initiatives

Finally, we meet Arun! He's a product manager responsible for this entire initiative. He is working with several API teams and application developers. As this initiative gains momentum, he needs to understand whether it is progressing well, what the challenges are, and if there are any security concerns? Arun must be able to present to the CIO and CTO how the initiatives are performing. He needs to ensure that they don't end up in the news due to security risks. The APIs need to be secure, and he doesn't want any security issues. Arun needs to be able to present reports and charts without relying on Excel. He wants to find a better way to do this. That’s the challenge for the product manager.

Here we have Arun, the product owner, who needs to understand API usage insights. There needs to be clarity on what’s being used well and what isn’t, as well as measurable business outcomes from these API initiatives.

Let’s get into action and see how this works. I move tabs and log in as Arun, the product manager. I’ll click on what we call "Business Insights." Business Insights provides all the information you need about your APIs. We are constantly running traceability across all your gateways, providing information for all your environments, all in one place.

Just as you had a single pane of glass for discovering APIs, you now have a single pane of glass to view the health of all your APIs in one place. You have the leaderboard, which shows the fastest, slowest, most used, and least used APIs. Why is this important? Arun needs to determine which APIs to continue investing in and which to stop investing in.

You can see that the most used APIs are Natural Language Processing, while Robotics and Control Simulation are not as popular. He needs to find out how to improve the latter. Similarly, the fastest API is the Autonomous API, but the slowest is AI Video Analysis. Arun needs to investigate what’s causing the performance issues to ensure that APIs are presented effectively to consumers.

There are also analytics on consumer engagement, showing how consumers are performing daily and monthly, and detailing all the applications they are using to access the APIs. This provides Arun with enough information to present to his C-level audience. He can quickly gather all the necessary information in one place, without needing Excel.

So, what did we see? We understood usage patterns and how to allocate resources more effectively. We learned how to make informed choices. Finally, why does it matter? This boosts profitability. You can sharpen your investment strategy and secure a competitive edge. Based on analysis done with various companies, this can result in over a million dollars in profit.
