API Governance: Discover the ‘Unknown Unknowns' for Tighter Security

API security is critical for enterprises to protect against unknown threats and ensure robust digital transformation.

As the adage goes, you can't manage – or secure – what you don't know about. At the start of the year, Axway Catalysts VP Brian Otten had advised enterprises to focus on zero-trust security and security through the entire stack to avoid becoming another high-profile security breach. Halfway through 2024, we’re following up on our digital transformation predictions – and looking to what’s next. In this new interview, Brian notes that many enterprise leaders are realizing they don’t necessarily know how many APIs they have or where there may be security gaps.

One of the things that is going to be important is being able to discover the unknown unknowns. For example, identifying what on the network looks like an API call, detecting it, understanding where it came from, and then quickly determining whether it should be shut down or integrated into your system. It may be something very valuable that you want to bring into the fold.

Having the ability, as we're developing with our Amplify platform, to detect these things, integrate with other security solutions, and sniff out these unknown or unmanaged APIs is crucial. They are out there; that’s the reality. People are calling these things. The trick is to get that information back into governance.
