He continues, "For example, the Internal Revenue Service now requires that all its partners must encrypt data at rest as well as in flight. Working with Axway, we recently updated our SecureTransport platform to support at-rest and in- flight encryption, and deployed a new high-availability cluster configuration to ensure resiliency — enabling us to move IRS data using the platform." Moving sensitive data securely and efficiently With SecureTransport at the heart of its MFT process, the Office of the Comptroller of Maryland can stay up to date with the latest regulations concerning the security and governance of sensitive financial data. "We are now gradually migrating file-transfer workloads from legacy FTP platforms to SecureTransport, which is enabling us to decommission servers and reduce our management and maintenance overheads," explains Thompson. "Since we re-architected our SecureTransport platform last year, we've seen a 25 percent increase in MFT workloads on the platform, and we believe we will see a further increase of 75 percent in the near future. As well as strengthening our security posture, moving these processes from FTP servers to SecureTransport will make it even faster and easier to monitor our SLAs and demonstrate our compliance during audits." Laying the foundation for value-added services Based on the success of its work around MFT, the agency is exploring other opportunities to enhance its services. To enable taxpayers to submit their tax returns more easily, the organization recently purchased Axway Syncplicity — a cloud-based file-sharing and collaboration solution from Axway. "Many citizens submit their returns via email, and we see great potential to make that journey more streamlined and secure with Axway Syncplicity," adds Thompson. "I don't use the word game-changing very often, but with Syncplicity it applies. As well as empowering citizens to upload their tax information rapidly via our website, we plan to use Syncplicity APIs to create a full audit trail of every transaction for our regulators. "Syncplicity already has Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program [FedRAMP] Ready status, which meant it was easy for us to secure the buy-in we needed to move forward — and the project is already well underway." He concludes, "To serve government employees and the wider public effectively, it's essential that we can exchange the sensitive data that is entrusted to us securely, reliably and in full compliance with our regulators. By partnering with Axway, we are laying the solid foundation we need to deliver innovative digital services for citizens across the state."
