Renta 4 drives service innovation with APIs

Going to market three-times faster with help from Axway

Renta 4 Banco S.A. is a leading independent financial services company, providing wealth management, asset management, brokerage and corporate finance advisory services in Spain and Latin America. With over €25 billion in assets under management, the company operates a network of more than 60 branches and serves over 100,000 high-net-worth customers.

Miguel Jaureguizar Francés, Head of Digital Development at Renta 4, says, “At Renta 4, we believe that investment is good for society — and every saving  is an investment opportunity. We leverage technology to deliver a welcoming and convenient experience for our customers, and to create innovative services such as personalized investment products.”

For Renta 4, APIs play a vital role in underpinning day-to-day operations, including the company’s online and mobile platforms. Miguel Jaureguizar Francés comments, “Several years ago, we built a robust API infrastructure to allow us to deliver high-quality services to our customers and engage securely with our wider community of external stakeholders. For example, we use APIs to support our identity and access management capabilities, which have never been more important in a world where new threats such as AI impersonation are emerging all the time.”

To enhance its service offering, Renta 4 aimed to step up its use of APIs. To help achieve the goal, the company looked for a new API management solution.

“We didn’t just want to work with another technology vendor,” says Miguel Jaureguizar Francés. “We wanted a true partner to support us on the next phase of our digital transformation journey.”

Working with a trusted advisor

To realize its vision, Renta 4 chose Amplify API Management — enabling open, secure and efficient API management throughout the API lifecycle.

“We’re big believers that long-term partner relationships lead to higher-quality services,” explains Miguel Jaureguizar Francés. “One of the things we like most about Axway is their willingness to accompany us in every step of the process, from implementation and beyond. Of all the vendors we considered, the Axway team was by far the most engaged and committed to our roadmap.”

Achieving a fast deployment

With the services contract for its existing API management solution coming to an end, Renta 4 needed to work quickly to make the transition to the Amplify Platform.

“We’re a hands-on business, and we wanted a partner who would roll their sleeves up and help us complete the implementation quickly,” recalls Miguel Jaureguizar Francés. “Axway pulled out all the stops to help us make the transition to the Amplify Platform within our strict deadline. With the team’s help, we achieved the switchover on time — avoiding the business risk of downtime to our API services.”

He adds, “When you are switching from one platform to another, there are moments when you need to move very quickly and there are moments when you need to slow down and think carefully about your next steps. The Axway team was very flexible and adapted to our requirements as they evolved throughout the project.”

Managing millions of API calls

Today, the company uses its new API management platform to handle millions of API calls annually, with volumes rising by over 10 percent year-on-year.

Miguel Jaureguizar Francés says, “As we continue to develop our API capabilities, our volumes will continue to increase. With the Amplify Platform, we can scale with confidence and maintain full control over our APIs across the whole lifecycle.”

Going to market 3x faster

By embracing the Amplify Platform, Renta 4 can streamline API development, enhance data governance and cut time to market for API-led initiatives.

“One of the biggest advantages of moving to the Amplify Platform is that our deployment speed is so much higher,” confirms Miguel Jaureguizar Francés. “For example, we recently started working on crypto asset intermediation services. Thanks to our work with Axway, we estimate that we’ll be able to complete development projects in as little as one third of the time it took with our previous API management infrastructure.”

Eliminating technical debt

In the move to the Amplify Platform, Renta 4 took the opportunity to eliminate technical debt from its API infrastructure, promoting higher levels of reliability for API services.

“Technological debt is often a burden on financial services firms, and we were no exception,” explains Miguel Jaureguizar Francés. “By working with Axway to introduce the Amplify Platform, we’ve driven a huge reduction in technological debt.”

Optimizing cost and risk

With monitoring capabilities from Axway, Renta 4 can ensure that its API services are running smoothly 24/7. And with a transparent and predictable licensing model, the Amplify platform offers the company peace of mind and operational cost-efficiency.

“We can now monitor our API transactions with a level of granularity that simply wasn’t possible with our previous tool,” says Miguel Jaureguizar Francés. “In time, we plan to explore how we could leverage additional capabilities of the Amplify Platform to support our activities.”

Driving service innovation

Looking ahead, Renta 4 plans to accelerate its API development efforts to bring added value to customers around the world. The company has already used the platform to help streamline customer journeys on its online and mobile channels, and it has plans to use API capabilities to expand its banking offering to a wider client base.

“Axway understands the commercial and regulatory requirements of the financial sector, which puts them very high up on our list of strategic partners,” concludes Miguel Jaureguizar Francés. “In Axway, we see the potential for a decades-long collaboration.”
